Who are the Shia?
The word Shia means "followers" — specifically, the followers of Imam Ali عليه السلام and the family of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Shia Islam follows the teachings of the Prophet as preserved and transmitted through his household, the Ahlul Bayt عليهم السلام, and the twelve Imams who succeeded him as divinely appointed guides.
Shia Muslims share the foundations of Islam with all Muslims — belief in the One God (Allah), the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ, the same Holy Qur'an, and the Day of Judgment. What distinguishes the Shia is the belief that leadership of the Muslim community (Imamah) was appointed by God through the Prophet — beginning with Imam Ali عليه السلام at Ghadir Khumm — and continuing through his rightful successors from the Prophet's family.
From its earliest days, the Shia have been known for a distinctive spirit: rationality in understanding faith, love and obedience to the Ahlul Bayt عليهم السلام, an unwavering pursuit of justice, and compassion toward all of God's creation. Over the centuries, the school of the Ahlul Bayt has made profound contributions to the Islamic sciences, law, philosophy, and civilization.

Justice
Standing for what is right — the legacy of Imam Ali عليه السلام and the sacrifice of Karbala.
Compassion
Mercy and kindness toward all people, and service to those in need.

The message of Karbala
In 680 CE, Imam Husayn عليه السلام — the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ — refused to bow to tyranny and was martyred with his family and companions at Karbala. His stand became the eternal lesson that faith, dignity, and justice are worth every sacrifice.
