Why we commemorate
In the month of Muharram, we remember the sacrifice of Imam Husayn ibn Ali عليه السلام, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who stood against tyranny at Karbala and gave everything to preserve the soul of Islam.
Each year our community gathers for majalis — assemblies of remembrance held in Farsi (Persian) — to hear the story of Karbala, to reflect on its timeless lessons of justice, dignity, and faith, and to renew our commitment to the values Imam Husayn عليه السلام died defending. Every Ashura we come together to honour his sacrifice.

The stand of Imam Husayn عليه السلام
In the year 61 AH (680 CE), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Imam Husayn ibn Ali عليه السلام, refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Mu'awiya — a ruler whose tyranny and corruption threatened the very heart of Islam. To swear loyalty would have meant sanctioning injustice; to refuse meant almost certain death.
Answering the people of Kufa who had invited him, Imam Husayn عليه السلام set out with his family and a small band of loyal companions. They were intercepted in the desert of Karbala and surrounded by an army of thousands.
For days the caravan was denied water under the burning sun. On the tenth day of Muharram — the Day of Ashura — Imam Husayn عليه السلام, his family, and his companions faced the army of Yazid. One by one they fell: his brother Abbas عليه السلام, his young son Ali Akbar عليه السلام, and even his six-month-old infant Ali Asghar عليه السلام, martyred by an arrow. Finally, Imam Husayn عليه السلام himself was killed in prostration to God.
The women and children of the Prophet's household, led by Imam Husayn's sister Lady Zaynab عليها السلام, were taken captive and marched to Kufa and Damascus. There, through her fearless sermons in the court of the tyrant, Lady Zaynab عليها السلام carried the message of Karbala to the world — ensuring that the sacrifice would never be forgotten.
Imam Husayn عليه السلام did not rise for power or wealth, but to reform the community of his grandfather and to revive the truth. His stand became the eternal example that dignity, justice, and faith are worth every sacrifice — "Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala."
